An irrigation spring start up is the process of preparing and activating an irrigation system after it has been shut down for the winter months. With 40+ years of designing, installing, and servicing 1000’s of irrigation systems, RAIN RICH has developed a comprehensive check list that ensures your system is ready to go for when the weather turns warm. Our check list separates us from our competition due to our experience and our commitment to deliver value to you, our valued client.

This is what happens during a spring start up:

  1. System Inspection
    1. Visually check all sprinkler heads, valves, and pipes for any damage.
    2. We look for broken pipes, sprinkler heads, and valves.
    3. Check wiring at zone valves.
    4. Check the main shut off valve for proper operation.
  2. Backflow Prevention Device
    1. Inspect and turn on the backflow prevention device. The BFD keeps dirty water from flowing back into your drinking water.
    2. If your water district requires certified testing, we can provide that service.
  3. Slowly Turn On the Water
    1. We turn the water on to the system slowly to fill the system before fully opening the main valve. This is to avoid pressure surges, which can cause damage to pipe and sprinkler equipment.
  4. Zone Testing
    1. Each irrigation zone is turned on to:
      1. Check water pressure.
      2. Make sure all zone valves are opening and closing from the controller.
      3. Make sure all sprinkler heads are functioning properly.
      4. Adjust spray patterns to ensure coverage.
      5. Identify and repair any leaks, clogs, sprinkler heads, etc.
  5. Controller Programming
    1. The irrigation controller is checked for proper programming.
    2. If necessary, the controller is reset and programmed for the proper time.
    3. Adjust watering time and days based on weather, soil, and plant needs.
  6. Clean Up and Final Check
    1. Double check that everything is working efficiently.
    2. Make recommendations. E.g., Smart Controllers, rain sensors, drip irrigation.

A beautiful landscape is a valuable investment and the cost to maintain a sprinkler system that sustains a healthy landscape is far less expensive than replacing lawn, shrubs, and trees.
