For your lawn and landscape the summer heat and humidity rages on. At this time on Long Island, we have turned on all sprinkler systems, made all necessary repairs, and programmed the controller to operate. With the heat and dry weather all irrigation systems are in continuous use. Many of the older systems are breaking down, and we are receiving calls for service and repairs every day for the following items which include:

  1. Broken pipes
  2. Broken sprinkler heads
  3. Missing sprinkler heads
  4. Sprinkler heads that stop rotating
  5. Clogged Sprinkler nozzles
  6. Tree roots strangling pipe
  7. Zone valves that have worn out and won’t shut off.
  8. Clogged zone valves that have stones, glass, metal objects that will not shut off.
  9. Electrical connections that have corroded
  10. Broken wires
  11. Worn out rain sensors
  12. Controllers that have stopped working

Most manufacturers will rate the lifespan of their residential irrigation equipment for 5 – 8 years under ideal conditions. For Long Island, with our freezing winters and hot summers, the lifespan is less. Commercial grade equipment will last 10 -15 years and that is our choice for a Rain Rich installation. Commercial grade equipment lasts longer, performs better, and requires a lot less service related calls.

My recommendation to you, with weeks to go before the end of summer, is to check your sprinkler system often. Look for the items which I have listed above. Reviewing your sprinkler system once per week running each zone for 2 -5 minutes and observing proper watering. Look for sprinkler heads to rotate, broken pipes, out of adjustment sprinkler heads, etc.
