The calendar says spring begins this Wednesday and although the weather is still cold on Long Island, warm temperatures will be here soon. With that great thought in mind I would like to remind you to schedule your sprinkler start up today. It will only be a few weeks before your lawn and landscape will require watering especially if you are planting new shrubs, trees, or renovating your lawn. It is our goal to have your sprinkler system operating properly and ready to activate when needed. When we turn your system on we are looking for broken sprinkler equipment or equipment that no longer works well and to make adjustments. If we can assure your system is working properly now then we can avoid emergencies later.

During the past 40+ years that I have been servicing sprinkler systems I have developed a check list that each of my Rain Rich technicians must follow to insure that each sprinkler system is working properly. The following list are some of the key items:

  1. Turn on main valve sprinkler valve and fill the sprinkler main and valve manifold.
  2. Check for leaks in the sprinkler main pipe and manifold.
  3. Inspect backflow device for damage and leaks.
  4. Turn on each sprinkler zone and check for broken or missing sprinkler heads, broken pipe, and leaks.
  5. Turn on each sprinkler zone and check adjustments, proper rotation and spray, crooked and or misaligned sprinkler heads.
  6. Check each solenoid valve for leaks, and proper on/off operation.
  7. Check the wiring at each solenoid valve for proper connection and damaged wiring.
  8. Turn each sprinkler zone on manually from controller to insure proper on/off operation.
  9. Program controller for proper spring watering.
  10. Visually inspect rain sensor.
  11. Evaluate sprinkler system performance and make recommendations.

Please be aware that each sprinkler system is customized to your property and there may be additional items that require attention. The Spring Turn On or Summerizing of your sprinkler system addresses the proper functioning and is a time consuming labor intensive effort. Please schedule your appointment now and allow us the time to serve you! Harsh winters, like this past winter, also have a negative effect on sprinkler equipment.  There will be more repairs than normal this spring. Please be aware that older systems typically require more time and more repairs than new systems.

A beautiful landscape is a valuable investment and the cost to maintain a sprinkler system that sustains a healthy landscape is far less expensive than replacing lawn, shrubs and trees.
