At this time of year on Long Island, you should begin watering when the daytime temperature is above 70 degrees and there is little or no rain. If it hasn’t rained for 3 or 4 days and the weather is sunny and warm then I believe you can begin to run your system automatically. This is a very general answer to a more complex issue. The answer will vary depending upon the following:

  • New landscape vs. established landscape. New landscapes require regular watering until roots are established.
  • New lawn vs. established lawn. New seed and or new sod requires regular watering until roots are established.
  • Heavy clay soil vs. sandy soil. Heavy clay soils that exist on the north shore of Long Island hold their moisture and that moisture is available to plants. Sandy soils that exist on the south shore of Long Island hold little moisture and therefore need frequent watering.
  • Full sun areas vs. shady or partial shade areas. Full sun evaporates water quickly from plants and soil. Full sun areas will require more frequent watering then shade or shady areas.
  • Wide open properties vs. smaller closed in properties. A wide open landscape will experience more air flow and will cause faster evaporation of moisture from plants and soil. These areas require more frequent watering.
  • Landscapes in full sun along a road and on the south side of a building vs. landscapes in rear yards away from reflective heat will require more frequent watering.

There are many areas on Long Island that have their own micro climate that will dictate the amount of water your landscape requires. A few examples are:

  • Homes along the water or nearby experience windy conditions that will cause the landscape to dry out quickly.
  • Homes and properties in the middle of the island are much cooler in the spring and will require less frequent watering.

Rain Rich has been activating sprinkler systems and installing new systems since the beginning of March. Temperatures have been on the average cold to cool. Soil temperature are still cold and there is still plenty of moisture in the ground available for plants to absorb. We have been leaving the irrigation controllers in the “off” position and telling our clients to turn controller to “on” or “run’ when they are ready to begin automatic watering.

Running your sprinkler system less saves water which will save you money. Run your sprinkler system when the weather turns warm and dry. For more information on operating your irrigation system efficiently and keeping your landscape healthy please visit our website at www.rainrich.com.
