It doesn’t happen often, however, occasionally, a sprinkler zone will run and run and won’t shut off. You see this and will go to the controller and turn the dial to off and the zone will continue to operate!
The problem is usually dirt and debris fouling the zone valve and preventing it from closing. Solenoid valves are electrically actuated hydraulic valves. The controller sends power to the valve to open and the valve closes when controller stops sending power.
During the spring, when everyone is opening their systems and using water, dirt & debris is kicked up due to turbulence in the municipal water supply. Some of the dirt & debris works its way into your home water main and into your sprinkler system. Most of the time it will pass through a valve and sometimes, unfortunately, it will get stuck in a valve preventing it from closing or closing partially. The solution is to close the main valve to the system, take the valve apart, and flush the dirt & debris, reassemble the valve, and test its operation. This will usually result in a service call to Rain Rich. If this should happen then close the main valve to the sprinkler system and call us to come and clean it out.
A beautiful landscape is a valuable investment and the cost to maintain a sprinkler system that sustains a healthy landscape is far less expensive than replacing lawn, shrubs, and trees.
