Normally most residential and commercial landscapes on Long Island do not require regular watering until around mid-May. Long Island receives a fair amount of rain, approximately 4”/month, for April and May. Most lawns and landscapes do not come out of dormancy until the end of April and beginning of May. During this time period the moisture in the soil along with cool temperatures provide all the water plants need. Watering in April and May is not beneficial and overwatering may be harmful as too much water in the soil will harm many types of plants and wash nutrients away.

At this time, I do recommend that you have your sprinkler system activated and repaired to be ready for when warm weather does arrive. Activating your sprinkler system in April and May is a worthwhile investment as Rain Rich can check the system, make repairs, and determine your needs before the hot weather arrives.

Please remember that at completion of service all controllers are left in the “off” position and the owner is responsible for turning the controller to “on” or “run” when ready to water.

Preparation is the key to a healthy and beautiful landscape.
